Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780) was an African born on a slave ship. He was raised as a house slave in Britain. He taught himself to read, and escaped at age 20. A bequest enabled Sancho to buy a small shop, and he became an author and a composer of songs and dances.

Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins (1849-1908) was an African American classical pianist and composer. Born a slave, he was also blind and autistic. Concerts and sheet music generated huge profits for his owners, but not for him.
